Stand Up Paddle Boards
SUP is in Jeffreys Bay, Africa!!
on the web at: www.africaSUP.com
Where are you located?
In beautiful Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa
What are some highlights of your company and what it has to offer?
Hi, My name is John Quinn and I’m the lead Shaper / Designer.
At AfricaSUP we do custom shaping and design of handmade paddle boards.
Being located in one of the worlds best surfing areas is a great opportunity to test and refine our custom SUP boards. The Eastern Cape is also home to some of Southern Africa’s best flat water paddling areas as well.
Near to Jeffreys Bay we have 4-5 major paddle rivers close at hand.
Estuary cruising and extreme SUP fishing are also some of our major pastimes!
All the shapes are hand made and glassed in 100% light and strong epoxy resin.
Our blanks are also made in-house from environmentally friendly and recyclable EPS foam.
Some of our Company’s unique story – history wise:
My dad William “Bill” Quinn was a lifeguard in New York and later moved to Topanga CA in the 60′s to become a leading aerospace engineer. We grew up on and around SoCal beaches (Malibu, Topanga) and in the water our whole lives.
I’ve now got twenty plus years as a licensed USCG Captain and 40 plus as all around water person.
All our tour guides are all South Africa Red Cross trained and seasoned Water Men and Woman as well!
What are some highlights about the location?
JBAY – Voted the Worlds best Right hand Point and one of the top ten surfing spots worldwide and home to miles and miles of pristine “unridden” beaches.
The Garden Route – a coastal corridor on the Southern coast of South Africa, where ancient forests, rivers, wetlands, dunes, stretches of beach, lakes, mountain scenery and indigenous fynbos all merge to form a landscape of awesome beauty and variety.
Of the world’s six floral kingdoms, this is the smallest and richest per area unit. Contrast it in size with the Holarctic kingdom, which incorporates the whole of the northern hemisphere apart from the tropical regions. The diversity of fynbos plants is extremely high, with over 9000 species of plants occurring in the area, around 6200 of which are endemic,
i.e. they do not grow anywhere else in the world. This level of variety is comparable to tropical rainforests or large islands and is unique in a relatively dry continental area.
This is a strip of land like no other in the world in terms of beauty, natural attractions and unique flora and fauna – hence its name.
Three of South Africa’s top hikes take place here – The Tsitsikama, Dolphin trails and the Otter Trail Few footprints have made contact with the rugged and sometimes inaccessible coastline. The Garden Route is a paradise for eco-lovers, bird watchers and solitude seekers . It lies sandwiched between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean and should be on every tourist’s itinerary. The Garden Route is a number one holiday destination during summer and a quiet hideaway during the winter months – both seasons are equally beautiful and attractive due to the largely Mediterranean climate of the Garden Route.
Tell us what made you get into the sport of SUP?
Growing up in California our parents sent my brothers and I to the LA County Jr. Lifeguards every summer. The Lifeguards had paddle boards that were always so cool and challenging to ride, and even to carry as a kid!!
Later we used to go on flat days offshore Topanga Point CA on our surfboards and paddle out as far as possible just to see how it was “out there”. That sense of adventure and freedom feels the same on a SUP now.
My first SUP board was in Easkey on the West Coast of Ireland.
We were living there while I was working in the Wind farm business, installing those giant turbines offshore you see in pictures.
Living in the village of Easkey was great, It’s got a great wave for SUP but the waters a bit cold - 45 deg at times – so standing was a bit of a plus as well! It was so great to jump over a Loch (Irish for lake) if the waves were flat and start paddling, hitting all the places that had never been paddled before like Loch Easkey in the remote Ox Mountains. Just seeing the world from a new and fresh perspective makes it all worthwhile!
We’ve lived in Jeffrey Bay now for about 10 years and SUP is just a natural extension of our families Water-lifestyle.
What made you want to start or get involved with this company?
Other SUP boards are all imported into SA. And we wanted to be the first in South African to make and sell locally made SUPS here in Jeffreys Bay and produce them for surfing and touring Southern Africa. This gives us the ability to control quality and to guarantee a top quality product. We also build prototype racing and surfing SUP boards and test them here in JBAY.
What is your favorite thing about SUP?
Getting out on the Water anytime, anywhere!
Anything else our readers should know about you, your company, or SUP?
