Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board in Innovative 6” Design Introduced by Tower SUP

San Diego, CA January 15, 2012 – Tower Paddle Boards, an emerging design and innovation leader in flat water SUP and paddle surfing boards, announced the introduction of an innovative 6 inch inflatable stand up paddle board, the Tower Adventurer.

The Tower 6 inch inflatable is quite a different design than competing inflatable boards. While most inflatable boards are 4 inches thick and 29-30 inches wide, the extra 2 inches of thickness represents a giant leap forward in inflatable SUP rigidity. The extra width combined with the overall increase in volume dramatically improve the floatation and stability of Tower’s inflatable board.

“Put simply, the closer your inflatable SUP is to the shape of a piece of paper, the more flimsy it is, and the closer the shape is to a cube, the more rigid. By going to a 6″ thick design, the rigidity doesn’t just increase a bit, it increases exponentially.” said Tower SUP founder Stephan Aarstol “As with most people, we were kind of disappointed with the 4″ inflatable SUPs on the market, so we tweaked the design and were blown away with the difference the thickness made. Customers can’t even believe it’s an inflatable once they try it.”

With the Adventurer, an inflatable SUP is not only a viable option, it may be a better option than EPS/Epoxy boards for anyone that travels or does not live right in the surf zone. While inflatable SUPs are still relatively unknown, many customers are turning towards the inflatable option once they try them because of the convenience, price, and their relative indestructibility.

Tower SUP sells its’ inflatable boards direct so their price on the Adventurer is $495. Comparable quality inflatable SUPs retail for $900-$1200. Tower’s first production run will start shipping in late April. They’re pre-selling now for an extra $100 of the price and the first production run may well sell out before they even start shipping.

“Stand up paddle boarding has not been a convenient sport until now” said Kelly, a Tower Paddle Boards customer. “The option of inflatable SUPs will make it much easier for traveling.”

SUP Start-up Tower Paddle Boards Eclipses its Goal of $250,000 in Sales During 1st Year of Operation

San Diego, CA December 31, 2011Stand up paddle board company, Tower Paddle Boards, has reached $250,000 in sales during its first year of operation. This should be no surprise considering that stand up paddle boarding, also known as SUP, is the fastest growing water sport in the world.

“2011 proved the value proposition of our business model and we’re ahead of our projections,” said Stephan Aarstol, owner of Tower Paddle Boards, “but as a start-up we weren’t really on the map yet nationwide, plus we missed about half the season as we didn’t ship the first Tower boards until July. This upcoming year will be a far better indicator of where Tower is going”.

Tower has seen most of its’ sales from the Tower Fit 9’10”, a purposely designed and well conceived all around stand up paddle board. It suits beginners learning to SUP as well as people wanted to get more into surfing. The Tower Fit 9’10” was designed by a local shaper in San Diego, a 25-year veteran surfboard shaper that’s been featured in Surfer Magazine. It’s intentionally different from most boards on the market, which typically feature dimensions 11′-12′ long, 30″ wide, and 4 1/4″ thick. The Tower Fit 9’10” design is significantly shorter, wider, and thicker, and thus has better floatation and is much more stable. It’s also substantially lighter making it much easier to transport and store.

“I’ve lived on the beach my whole life and have been looking to get into a new water sport,” said Tricia, Tower Paddle Boards’ customer “I was very excited when I learned about paddle boarding and chose to purchase with Tower because of their innovative design and unbeatable price.”

Tower uses a manufacturer direct business model, which cuts retail and corporate markup out of the equation. A customer is essentially getting a $1200 board for almost half of the cost. Tower also offers flat rate shipping of $89 to anywhere in the country. The popularity of the sport, Tower’s innovative design, and their business model have all contributed to the success they have seen in their first year of operation.

The boards are being well received and the initial shipment nearly sold out before the boards even arrived from the production facility.

Carbon Fiber SUP Paddle Sold Direct Introduced by Tower SUP

San Diego, CA June 15, 2011 – Tower Paddle Boards, an emerging design and innovation leader in flat water SUP and paddle surfing boards, announced the debut of their direct to market carbon fiber SUP paddle. It’s an ultralight SUP paddle, but also extremely durable and well designed. Tower will be selling the paddle for $189. Comparable paddles sell at retail for $250-$300.

“We cut a chunk out of the pricing of high-end paddles by selling direct, ” said Tower SUP founder Stephan Aarstol. “But we didn’t cut any corners on building in durability and a quality construction to an ultra light carbon fiber SUP paddle.”

Tower Paddle Boards’ Carbon Fiber Paddle only weighs 21.5 ounces when cut for someone approximately 6’ tall. It’s light, easy to use, and all for a very competitive price. The design of the blade features teardrop shape with a slightly flattened bottom edge. The face of the blade angles forward about 10 degrees and there is a slight cupping back near the bottom.

“When purchasing a paddleboard I didn’t take into account a paddle so I just grabbed the cheapest one” said Rick, a customer of Tower Paddle Boards. “After using Tower’s ultralight carbon fiber paddle, I understood what a difference the paddle makes.”

Tower Paddle Boards Making Waves in Booming SUP Market

Upstart, direct-to-consumer SUP (“Stand Up Paddle Board”) brand, Tower Paddle Boards has introduced the Tower Fit, an SUP that’s shorter, lighter, and more practical for beginners. It’s only available direct from Tower at an industry leading sub-$600 price point.

Where most beginner SUPs are surprisingly uniform in their long, narrow, thin design, the Tower Fit is significantly shorter, yet wider and thicker, which makes the floatation the same. It achieves better stability (a factor of width + Volume) in a lighter, more maneuverable size, which solves many of the storage and transportation nightmares that have plagued SUP users for years. What’s more, the resulting outline is a lot like a great big short board (surfboard) and thus it enjoys performance benefits in the surf as well. The double concave bottom contour aids in both flat water tracking and surfing speed down the line. It’s better design, plain and simple.

Where the primary players in the SUP market (existing surfboard, sailboard, and kayak brands) are dependent upon and thus inseparably tied to a traditional multi-tier distribution strategy, upstart Tower employs a direct to consumer model using the exact same factories as the major brands. For the majority of new SUP shoppers, whose first question is invariably why SUP boards are so expensive (traditionally $800-$1700), the Tower business model represents access to wholesale pricing levels.

“The pain for consumers thinking about getting into SUP right now is two-fold,“ said Stephan Aarstol, founder of Tower Paddle Boards. “The well designed, high-quality brand boards are nice, but also very expensive. Not everyone can afford dropping $1500-$2000 on a new hobby. The price point focused boards on the market are competing on the same shelves using the same distribution channel, yet they don’t have a brand name to protect so they are throwing design, quality, and durability out the window and focusing on cost, at all costs.”

“We’re different by design, “continues Aarstol. “By just selling direct, we’re able to cut 30-50% of the costs out of the distribution channel instead of shortsightedly trying to cut costs out of the design, quality, and innovation department. By foregoing a retail distribution strategy we can offer a board that’s twice as good as comparably priced SUPs and half the price of similarly quality boards. We can beat even Costco on price and quality. Of course we’re not going to sell 10,000 boards like a lot of the brands and the Costco’s of the world, but we’ll have a much better offering for consumers that do their homework. In today’s connected world, I believe that’s a viable long term strategy.”

The first shipment of Tower Fit SUPs arrives in June of 2011 and it’s already half sold out.

Tower Fit ranked #1 in top ten list of stand up paddle boards

Paddle surfboards come in all shapes and sizes, but finding the 10 best stand up paddle surfboards was quite a challenge. There are many brands to choose from and the pricing of the boards are quite diverse, so as a consumer you need to know what you are looking for in the board. Here is a list of the best standup paddle surfboards:

  1. Tower Fit SUP 9’10” is one of the best boards on the market offering a full body workout. This board is stable enough to hold a 250-pound person afloat without flipping over because of the weight. The Tower is easy to store and is twenty percent lighter than its competition. This board is priced just beneath $500 dollars, which is a great price range for anyone on a budget.
  2. The 9’6” Performer Corbean SUP (Pure Series) is a high performance surfboard that will bring enjoyment to anyone who enjoys the ocean. The board has carvings in it to prevent nose-diving and the thicker center of the board enables it to be more stable while afloat. The reinforced feature from its nose to the tail that this board offers makes the price of below $1,300 a great buy.
  3. Jimmy Styks 11’6” is made of the expanded polystyrene foam cores unlike the traditional stand up boards. This material allows this board to surf but it is best for the user looking for small waves or someone who just wants to paddle along in the ocean enjoying the scenery. This is a great board for a beginner surfer who will not pay more than $750  for this board.
  4. Xscape SUP 12’0” is great in both the oceans and lakes. This board is made of epoxy fiberglass, making it lighter so it is easier to carry and stay afloat. The Xscape will cost $1,500 in the store, but online it is just below $900.
  5. Surftech Laird 12’1” Soft Top is stable enough that it can be ridden on all bodies of water. This high performance board has a soft deck padding, making it easier for the rider to feel the traction and grip the board. This Laird is priced just below $1,600, but it is worth the price because it offers the same qualities as a hard body stand up paddle board.
  6. C4 Stand Up Paddle Board 12’1” Soft Top by Laird Hamilton is known for its durability and speed. For those who enjoy just paddling along the water, this is a great board to have because it works well in the ocean and on the lake.
  7. Starboard 12’6” SUP is the perfect universal board for anyone looking to hit the ocean waves or cruise on a lake. This is a cruiser board that is still fast when riding the waves. It also gives the rider a smooth glide across the water no matter what type of wind is blowing. This Starboard is just below $1,800, but you can get it for $1,500 when purchasing it online.
  8. Starboard Blend 11’2” is a traditional long board for surfing or gliding in any type of waters. This board is allows the rider to get a better grip when on the wave because of its flat surface. The Blend ranges in price anywhere from $1,800 to $1,300 depending on the coloring and design you are looking in a board.
  9. Starboard Drive 10’5” is a good board to ride on medium and small waves or on flat water. The Australian pine material used to make this board allows it to resist the impact of a wave, so the rider is not thrown off easily. This board is just under $1,300, which is a great price for the stability and confidence it will give you on the water.
  10. Isle Quad Stand Up Paddle Board performs the best when in the pocket because of its quad fin. Though this board is fantastic when it comes to shredding the surf it performs well on flat water, too. This board is under $900 and will have you riding the waves unlike any other board you have tried.

Local business looks to make splash in paddleboard sales

Seven years after finding success with poker chips, local business owner Stephan Aarstol is going all-in in a different arena. His new company, Tower Paddleboards, began selling paddleboards online earlier this month and recently opened a retail location in Pacific Beach.

“It really hasn’t taken off in San Diego,” Aarstol said of the paddleboard market. “They’re starting to pop up a little bit, but really it’s the ideal market, having 4,000 square feet of water park and the coast.”

Tower Paddleboards is currently open five days a week and by appointment at 4645 Cass St, Suite 104. The shop currently carries Coreban boards and Quickblade carbon fiber paddles and will carry the company’s own line within a couple months.

“I don’t know a ton about surfing or the paddleboard industry. That’s something that I’m going to have to educate myself on,” Aarstol said. “It’s not like there’s some grand scheme to go out there and put a novel twist on it.”

While admittedly not much of a surfer, Aarstol said he enjoys paddleboarding. He said he got the idea for Tower Paddleboarding while trying the activity out with a friend.

“Paddleboarding was a lot easier,” Aarstol said. “I caught five waves in the first hour and a half that I was out there, but then I got stung by a stingray.”

Even though he might be a newcomer to the sport that has seen a recent surge in popularity, Aarstol is familiar with search engine marketing — his area of expertise. That’s what makes him confident that his success in the high-end market of poker chips can carry over to the high-end market of paddleboards, where boards cost between $800 and $1,600 and paddles range from $200 to $400.

“I saw what kind of traffic there was out there and it turns out there’s really good search traffic,” Aarstol said. “It takes the guesswork out of ‘Will I be able to sell it?’”

At the height of the poker boom in 2004, Aarstol said his business, Sidepot Gaming Company, sold 450,000 chips in its first six months, when he estimates the demand for poker chips was 10 times what it is today. Despite a drop-off in popularity, Sidepot’s website still draws approximately 25,000 unique visitors per month via search engines such as Google.

“A lot of the competitors have gone away, but it was really competitive for a while,” Aarstol said.

Aarstol said Sidepot Gaming Company controls between 25 and 30 percent of the worldwide market in high-end poker chips. Sidepot sells its own lines of clay and ceramic poker chips that range from $500 to $1,500 per set. Customers include poker nuts, celebrities and companies.

“It’s not all just Internet marketing and trying to sell things at the lowest price,” Aarstol said. “There is solid business behind the scenes.”
